Parody Paintings Series x Jesse Rubenfeld

Michigan based artist Jesse Rubenfeld has recreated famous artistic images in his ‘Parody Paintings’ series, doing so with the added slant of incorporating modern icons into their historical context. The images, which span centuries old artworks to contemporary album covers, take on a playful and thought provoking aspect with the introduction of characters ranging from Sesame St., to the stars of Nintendo games. Skillfully rendered and executed, Rubenfeld’s paintings may not usurp the originals they borrow from, but they do inject a welcome sense of humor.

KIETH HARING

Kieth Haring was a super famous artist. In 1980, he started with chalk mural drawings on advertising panels in New York subway stations. He quickly gathered a street following and two years later, had an incredibly popular solo exhibition in a SOHO gallery.

For the rest of the decade, he participated in over 100 group and solo shows both domestic and international. He worked with Madonna, Grace Jones, Bill T. Jones, William Burroughs, Timothy Leary, Jenny Holzer, Yoko Ono and Andy Warhol.

During that decade of hyper-AIDS awareness, Haring’s art became a symbol of the awful disease. The artist was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988 and died of HIV related complications in 1990, at the young age of 31.

Let’s not forget the Pop Shop. The Pop Shop were stores that sold voluminous memorabilia of artist Keith Haring’s designs. Haring originally opened two Pop Shops; one at 292 Lafayette Street in SoHo (which closed in 2005) and one in Tokyo (which closed in 1988). Every area of the store was devoted to Haring’s work including floor-to-ceiling murals, which provided a clubhouse atmosphere. You can now find memorabilia online via: http://www.pop-shop.com/

“Hollywood Through The Lens – Celebrating 100 Years Of Hollywood” Exhibition

‘Hollywood through the lens – celebrating 100 years of Hollywood’ is an exhibition currently running at the Getty Images Gallery in London to celebrate a century of Hollywood.

It documents the evolution of Hollywood from the 1920s and features pretty much every iconic and influential star you can think of, from the early days of the silver screen through to today’s box office heavyweights.  A mixture of familiar publicity shots, red carpet events as well as more obscure and candid personal portraits of Paul Newman, Marilyn Monroe, Fred Astaire, Michael Caine and many others, the exhibition gives a fascinating insight into show business and how the perception of glamour and style has changed over the years, not only in the clothing styles and hair cuts, but in the way they are photographed and presented to the public too.
